Victorian Food Information Network - Food Safety Victoria

Extranet - Data Management System

The design, development and implementation of the VicFIN system by GUI Computing occured in the latter part of 2000. This was a reasonably large project, running for a period of 9 months and utilising a small team of three developers. During the early phases of this project the development team worked very closely with the staff at Food Safety Victoria to develop extremely tight functional specifications as well producing an effective pilot showcasing the core functionality of the system.

VicFIN is designed to provide Local Government Authorities, Testing Laboratories and other DHS internal and external users with a system that will be able to store, manage and report on information related to food testing and safety.

The VicFIN system features include:

  • Extensive reporting and search facilities
  • Comprehensive security that conforms with DHS policy
  • Centrally Shared Document repository
  • Managed Discussion forums
  • Survey functionality
  • Email notifications
  • News, Updates and Bulletins

This was a significant project for DHS and involved the development of detailed functional specifications as well as a range of user and technical documentation.

GUI continues to provide support for the VicFIN system with relation to maintenance and modifications allowing for the growth of this system over time.

Performance Information Management System - Business Development Branch

Intranet and Desktop System

In January 2002, GUI was contracted to develop a pilot web based reporting tool for the Performance Measurement & Reporting Unit within the Business Development Branch of DHS. The reporting tool was required to support the Executive level reporting process that takes place on both a monthly and quarterly basis. These reports contain significant detail relating to the Key Performance Indicators of DHS business units and had previously been compiled using both manual and semi automated processes.

The overall aim of the project was to produce a web based application that provides an easy to use interface for the input and recording of KPI data in a centralised database. This data could then be used to create Executive Performance Reports required by the Business Development Branch. The pilot application was completed within a very tight 8 week timeframe and was fully accepted into the DHS technical environment and released to a selected group of users.

The specifications for the production version of the application were then formalised based on the feedback from that "pilot" group, and development of the production version will be completed mid June 2002.

This new tool is a key facet in the streamlining of DHS's performance reporting process and so far it has met all of DHS's requirements.

IMPS 2 and 2.5

Desktop and Remote System

GUI was appointed in early 2004 to redevelop the ageing IMPS Paradox-based applictaion used by Local Government authorities to record and manage immunisation information with a modern Visual Basic/SQL Server/MSDE based application.

This complex development included remote data synchronisation, extensive rules-based validation of immunisation eligibility, stock control and data synchronisation with the Commonwealth HEalth Insurance Commission.

As is the way of things, in late 2005 the underlying rules governing when vaccines were to be administered changed radically. As did IMPS, emerging in release 2.5 in early 2006.

Drinking Water Quality Regulatory System (DWQRS)

Intranet and Extranet System

GUI was appointed in mid 2005 to develop a .NET based data collection, validatation and reporting system for the colation of drinking water quality reports from all Victroian Water Authorities.

This application will live in May 2006.
